20 Things You Should Try In Your 20's

Hello friends!

I'm writing to you today as one who has been 20 for all of three months and some odd days, but there are things I've thought about recently that I wanted to share. You see, I've been haunting this earth for two decades now, which has left me in a reflective and ponderous state. I'm also a Pisces through and through- if I don't have my feet in the water, my head is in the clouds, although I wouldn't mind both simultaneously.

20 things to do in your 20s

So even though I am barely 20, I hope you don't mind if I share twenty things I feel people should try to do in their twenties.

1. Travel somewhere alone, even for an hour or two. Walk around your city or town by yourself. Think. Ponder. Smile at your reflection when you pass by a window- you look incredibly gorgeous.

2. Say "I love you" with abandon. Whisper it to yourself when you need it most. When you say "I love you" make it about you.

3. Read a book that is about or set in a culture completely different from yours. Books are inexpensive plane tickets to different lands. Become a regular haunt at the library- make the librarians wonder if all you do is read. Prove them right.

4. Learn how you learn. Do you have to touch things to get a feel for it? Can you see it and know it? Does hearing the instructions help more? Is it a combo or all three? Figure it out now, and save yourself trouble.

5. Find out where your food comes from- see if you can stand to buy local or organic.

6. Try a few vegetarian and vegan meals. It won't hurt you to try, love.

7. Get some vitamin D and B12 supplements. Take them as often as you remember. Absorb some sunlight if possible.

8. Aim to get a diploma or degree- even if you don't end up getting it, at least you tried, and I'm incredibly proud of you.
9. Try meditation. Breathe in... Breathe out... Inhale the future... Exhale the past.

10. What is cathartic for you? Reading, writing, chatting with friends, yoga? Any of these or all? Or something completely different- just find out what helps you unload that burden, even if it's only temporary.

11. Get rid of toxic friends- you wouldn't keep smelly garbage inside your house, so why keep someone else's nastiness inside your head and heart?

12. Gain new friends. It may be slow, but begin to surround yourself with people who radiate positivity and light. Foster love all around you, and return it in kind.

13. Encourage your family to grow- be someone else's ray of sunshine for a moment. From an encouraging to comment to a spoken-extremely-loudly "you got this, babe", use your voice, your heart, and your love to help the members of your birth and chosen family.

14. ... or, take some time away from a family that stunts you. Your growth is the most important thing when it comes to bettering yourself. You can do all you can to help someone, but in the end, it is up to them.

15. Figure out your form of healthy self-love. Is it by appreciating every feature of yourself in a mirror? Or by writing down something you love about yourself in a journal?

16. Appreciate a form of nature. Smell a flower, soak up the sun.

17. Give jazz a chance. Give slam poetry a chance. I stand by this when I say I believe jazz and poetry go hand-in-hand, and they can make you feel.

18. Educate yourself on your morals, ethics, and what you stand for. Who are you?
What do you think? What do you believe in?

19. Work in retail for at least half a year. Learn what retail workers go through everyday and learn to appreciate what they do for us every single day.

20. Stop taking yourself so damn seriously all the time. Laugh at yourself. Get over your mistakes. Pick yourself back up, dust off your hands, and go back at it with a smile. If all else fails- fake it till you make it.
